Personal Safety and disabilities

The incident on Sunday got me thinking about how people with impaired mobility deal with the issue of personal safety. Perhaps a wheelchair is enough of a deterrent for potential assailants, and speedy enough to make a quick get-away. But all the attacked would have to do is knock the person over, out of the wheelchair, and then they would be fucked. I wonder if people who have had a minor case of polio, people like me who can walk but can't run away from an attacker, take extra precautions. I guess the main thing is to avoid potentially dangerous situations (like anybody else and especially women), but it sucks if people with disabilities are further limited by threats to personal safety, on top of their other limitations. No conclusions, just wondering...
